tanuki-ya

What is tanuki-ya?

tanuki-ya is a charming select shop located in Nozawaonsen Village, Nagano Prefecture.Gone are the days of mass producing disposable items that are used only once or twice before being discarded. We now live in a time where we’re more conscious of our impact on the environment and future.

It’s not just the material worth of a product that matters, but also the joy of owning it and understanding the maker’s story – their history, culture, and the unique characteristics of their region. These are the things that make products truly special and worth talking about.

At Tanukiya, we aim to create a place where cultural exchange flourishes through the discovery of beautiful objects. We hope to share the stories of our select shop with all of our customers and make it a hub of cultural richness.

Visions of Nozawa

Shaun Mitwollen

Explorer and renowned photographer, Shaun Mittwollen has been capturing the wild landforms, intricate village life and epic adventure around Nozawa Onsen for over a decade. From the deepest years where the winding streets are inundated with humongous polar snowfalls to the highest summits where sunset light dapples whimsical alpine Birch. Shauns images epitomize mountain life, exploring quiet winter forests and the stroke of riding powder around the beautiful village of Nozawa Onsen.
